Physical activity is vital for everyone at every age to stay healthy and fit. Good habits start when we’re young so it’s important for parents to start physical fitness with their children at an early age – Children also learn from example so it’s equally important for your children to see you making healthy eating and working out choices. Healthy habits equal a more healthy life!
- Create Structured Physical Activity Time – Set aside a minimum of 30 minutes a day for you and your children to be active and move your bodies! This can include playing sports, dancing, stretching, going for walks, running around at the park or in the snow, and so much more! Get creative and allow your children to think of fun physical activities you all can do as a family!
- Keep Young Ones Moving – Young children should not remain “stagnant” or in place for more than an hour at a time during the day. They have high amounts of energy so keep it exciting for them. Make sure your preschool and kindergarten age children’s teachers bring movement into lesson plans and play time. Some fun ideas are having your child jump while counting or singing the alphabet and acting out their favorite animals.
- Keep it Up-beat and Positive – The more engaging and positive the physical activity is, the more you and your children will stick to it! Don’t make physical activity feel like a punishment and everyone will stick with it for a very long time!
- Warm-Up and Cool Down – Make sure to teach your children the importance of both to avoid injury or strain to the body. These two important pieces of physical fitness will keep their growing bodies strong and limber too.
